Juniata College — Summer 2023
During the summer of 2023, I spent a few months working with Juniata College’s zoology collections. This work included triaging collection spaces and making recommendations for improvements, developing a new zoology portal within our existing database, and cataloging specimen records to import into that database. Over the course of this project, I cataloged over 2,600 specimens, organized and labeled shelving units under a new system, and presented my findings at the 2023 Landmark Conference.
Collections work is an ongoing process, and a portion of this project was also creating recommendations for future students interested in making our collections the best that they can be.
Prior to my project, Nikole Koenig (Juniata College class of 2023) used her senior capstone to identify the best way to organize the information in our database. I carried on her efforts by cataloging Juniata’s specimens using the system she designed. The data in this spreadsheet was then imported into the JCMA’s database.
I also collaborated with the JCMA’s director, registrar, and our contacts at our collections management software company to create another portal specifically for our zoology specimens. Having the records I prepared be publically accessible not just for our campus, but to anyone interested in becoming familiar with our collection, was incredibly important to me. I also photographed each specimen either independently or in groups.
I presented my findings to fellow research students and their advisors at the 2023 Landmark Conference at Susquehanna University.
